Last Sunday, when you (mulhollandj) approached me with this topic, I felt the spirit tell me to let it go.  To let you say what you wanted to say and just ignore it.  Unfortunately, the voice I ignored was that of the Spirit.  I will not let that be the case any further.

As a result, I have erased all messages I have posted on this thread in order to help erase the memory of this conversation.  I don't need the justification of anyone here to feel safe or right about the spiritual promptings I have received, nor do I particular care if any of you feel they are right or wrong.

I take welfare, and will continue to do so until I finish my college education.  I have found piece in this decision through study of the general authorities, council with my priesthood leaders, and through personal revelation as a result of prayer and fasting.  If you agree with my decision, thank you.  If you don't, thank you anyway.

The choice for how you feel about me is yours, but it will not affect me.  I make no apologizes for anything other than letting my feelings get the best of me.  I consider this matter closed and will not speak of it again.

I am adding my final summary. I said I would report when my priesthood leader gave me a response. After studying the issue my priesthood leader tonight told me that my thinking was correct. The Brethren have repeatedly warned us about it in the past which the various statements I have listed and more. The church manual "Providing In the Lord's Way" does say that

"Latter-day Saints have the responsibility to provide for themselves and their families. Individual members, however, may find it necessary to receive assistance byond that which the family can provide, in which case they may turn to the Church for help. In some instances, individual members may decide to receive assistance from other sources, including the government. In all such cases, member should avoid becoming dependent upon these sources and strive to become self-reliant. Where possible, they should work in return for assistance rendered"(p. 15)

He agreed with me that government welfare is extremely dangerous and that the brethren have warned us against it. We do have agency and can heed their warnings if we wish. We are entitled to personal revelation but if that contradicts a higher priesthood authority it is of the devil.

Good job to both of you. The point for both sides of the debate was well made. I want to say thanks to both of you for knowing when and how to close a heated debate and act like gentlemen in the end. That speaks well of both of you!

These forums are here to help people make their voices known on important issues and community information. Both of your input and opinion is much appreciated here anytime.
