A CALL TO ACTION!
Are You a Statist?
My dictionary defines: stat·ism (st³“t¹z”…m) n. The practice or doctrine of giving a centralized government control over economic planning and policy. --stat“ist adj. & n.
In Saturday’s HJ an Op-Ed piece from Hal Herring, of the Writers on the Range group, condemned game farms in general and specifically the Idaho game farm where elk recently escaped. While I do not think much of game farming, I do support the right of people to engage in such activity. What really came through though was the statement: “In Idaho, more than anywhere else in the West, people get elected to office on the strength of their hated of government. Once there, they take grim delight in destroying the intent of the institutions they have elected to serve.”
Gee I always thought that our representatives where elected to serve the people, not the institutions of government. This might seem trivial to some, but to me it is a sharp dividing line between those who believe in big government and its control over our lives and those who believe in freedom and the inalienable rights that we were born with.
Many people bow down to the altar of big government. They believe that all problems can be solved with enough bureaucracy. There is a huge divide between those Statists and the rest of us. It is what most Democrats seem to believe and unfortunately many Republicans. I have written previously about a wild boar farm in “Divide and Conquer.” There are numerous stories along these lines. While not all involve game farms, they do involve other abuses of government such as zoning violations and use of private property, etc.
People who advocate more government control have good intentions. That is what makes them so dangerous. If we just give up a little freedom life will be so much better! Since it usually involves something that we are not directly involved, with we do not get very upset. A little abuse here, another there, eventually we will wake up not having any freedom at all. We will live in a world where the Thad Box’s and Hal Herring’s dictate to us everything part of our lives. Heck, it is almost like that already. Want to put sprinklers on your parking strip? You will need a $50 permit. The enforcement of building codes has gotten so bad that you can do hardly any improvement on your property without their approval and involvement. And then what are the rewards? Higher buidling costs and greater property taxes! Drop by drop, measure by measure we are losing. Any so the question is, if you believe in freedom, what are you doing to defend lady liberty?
