I once read a book where a girl wanted to gain prestige in some chat rooms.  What she did is she created two personalities and had them argue.  People naturally took sides and both were raised to prominence.  It is interesting how the two largest parties, Democrats and Republicans, try to get us to choose sides also.  That way one of them is always in power.  The elections are always so close that if you vote for a third party not only is your vote 'wasted' but you are causing the candidate that is closer to your position to lose.

By only having two choices we tend to somewhat modify our views towards the one we choose.  We want to be right so we try to support and defend our position when we often don't understand it.  I caught myself in this same trap when I used to think that President Bush was trying to protect this country.  I kept coming up with reasons why what he was doing was OK.  Then I had a friend, who I thought was quite liberal, explain the Patriot Act to me a little.  At first I resisted and tried to defeat his arguements because I didn't want to be wrong.  The more I thought about it the more I realized how weak my position was.  Perhaps we should each consider our own political positions and decide why we take that position.
