A CALL TO ACTION!
Letter to the Herald Journal
Your recent defense (10/12/06) regarding the abysmal performance of the so called conservative columnists leaves much to be desired. Are you really that dense? Garth’s writings are hardly political in nature. I suggest that Archer’s writings aren’t much better. Writing about picnics, summer vacations etc. is hardly up to snuff when compared to the more political writings of Mr. Box, Mr. Mullin and now your new columnist’s overt socialists leanings. Is it because the majority of laceName w:st="on">CachelaceName> laceType w:st="on">ValleylaceType>(ites) are hold clear conservative viewpoints that you feel the necessity to educate them to your own more liberal leanings. I know that you believe that you are objective and hold to the middle road, but you daily production betrays you. Well over 95% of your political cartoons are left leaning. It is demonstrable by objective means that the AP’s staff shows clear liberal viewpoints in their covering of the news. Even you own selection of Op-Ed pieces leans more to the left in my viewpoint. I know it is impossible to be totally objective. But in your heart of hearts you know that your staff holds more to the liberal bent.
I have a great idea. Why not ask you readers what they think? I dare you. If you are so confident that you are producing a viewpoint neutral paper then you should not have any reservations. I can hear you coming up with excuses but let’s be frank. Ok, just between you and me, you know that you would get trounced. But you really think that you know better than all those rubes what the true picture is don’t you? I have experienced you arrogance personally. Charlie you will not brook any criticism, will you? And we both know who is really running the show.
So is that the only alternative, to your columnists lowering themselves to he said/she said level? I think it is possible to hold meaningful discussions about the nature/value of capitalism vs. socialism without it boiling down to personal attacks. Or whether the ownership of personal property is the basis of the founding of our republic and how far we have drifted from the original intent of the founding fathers. Can we not disagree about substantive issues without it boiling down to personal vendetta? You might not believe me, but my sole motivation for writing what I write, is that I do not see any balance in your paper. Left leaning intellectuals mostly from the University express their views far more than the majority of our citizens. Many are intimidated and feel themselves unable to express themselves adequately. Some think it pointless. They might be right, but I am unwilling to concede the playing field. There is too much at stake. So what say you? Are you willing to be fair?
